You don't need to activate the product key after you upgrade to Windows 10 as the activation has to be done on the Operating system from which we are upgrading from.

So if you had the key activated on Windows 7 SP1, then you don't need to activate it when upgrading to Windows 10.

If it was not done then unfortunately you may have to revert to Windows 7 activate the product then upgrade to Windows 10.

So you're saying that if I want to re-install Windows 10, which I upgraded from Windows 8.1, I need to reinstall Windows 8.1 first, then upgrade to Windows 10?

Can't Microsoft just give upgraders a Windows 10 product key?

If you have successfully upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and for some reason if a clean install of Windows 10 is performed that you need not worry about the product key. This is because you are performing the clean install on the same computer which has the same motherboard but with a new HDD. The activation servers will be able to recognize that the installation has happened on the same computer.

You need not install Windows 8.1 and then upgrade to Windows 10. The upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 is free so you do not need additional product key for upgrade.

Then what is this that I read on a Microsoft site that Window 10 free upgrades do not get a product key and instead get an entitlement?

This seems to be the case. Did an install of win7 and then upgraded with no problems.
